Joint source-channel decoding for variable-length encoded data by exact and approximate MAP sequence estimation

چکیده
Joint source-channel decoding based on residual source redundancy is an e ective paradigm for error-resilient data compression. While previous work only considered xed rate systems, the extension of these techniques for variablelength encoded data was recently independently proposed by the authors [6], [7] and by Demir and Sayood [1]. In this paper, we describe and compare the performance of a computationally complex exact maximum a posteriori (MAP) decoder [6], [7], its e cient approximation [6], [7], an alternative approximate MAP decoder [1], and an improved version of this decoder suggested here. Moreover, we evaluate several source and channel coding con gurations. Our results show that the approximate MAP technique from [6], [7] outperforms other approximate methods and provides substantial error protection to variable-length encoded data.

Robust transmission of variable-length encoded sources
Digital communications systems commonly use compression (source coding) and error control (channel coding) to allow efficient and robust transmission of data over noisy channels. When compression is imperfect, some residual redundancy remains in the transmitted data and can be exploited at the decoder to improve the decoder’s probability-of-error performance. A new approach to joint source-chan...
متن کاملReduced complexity maximum a posteriori decoding of variable-length codes
Until very recently, joint source channel techniques mostly focused on systems using fixed-length coding, eventhough variable-length coding (VLC) is widely used, particularly in video coding. Typically, VLC bit streams are made channel-robust through packetization and standard forward-error correction (FEC). However, when the channel conditions are fairly mild, FEC can reveal itself bandwidth-i...
متن کاملOn the joint source-channel decoding of variable-length encoded sources: the BSC case
This paper proposes an optimal maximum a posteriori probability decoder for variable-length encoded sources over binary symmetric channels that uses a novel state-space to deal with the problem of variable-length source codes in the decoder. This sequential, finite-delay, joint source-channel decoder delivers substantial improvements over the conventional decoder and also over a system that use...
متن کامل. Soft source decoding with applications
Motivated by recent results in joint source-channel coding and decoding, we consider the problem of decoding of variable-length codes using soft channel values. We present results of decoding of selected codes using the maximum a posteriori (MAP) decoder and the sequential decoder, and show the performance gains over decoding using hard decisions alone. The objective behind this work is to prov...
متن کاملJoint Source-Channel Decoding of Variable-Length Codes with Soft Information: A Survey
Multimedia transmission over time-varying wireless channels presents a number of challenges beyond existing capabilities conceived so far for third-generation networks. Efficient quality-of-service (QoS) provisioning for multimedia on these channels may in particular require a loosening and a rethinking of the layer separation principle. In that context, joint source-channel decoding (JSCD) str...
